If you are considering getting a companion bird as a pet, it's  helpful  to know the average lifespan of some of the different species of pet birds. For somebody like me whose a senior citizen and retired, adopting a macaw with a life expectancy much longer than my own would NOT be a good idea. A rule of thumb is that the larger the bird, the longer the lifespan. A bird's actual lifespan depends on whether or not it is receiving proper nutrition, veterinary care and attention. Most of the birds below have been known to live years longer than what is stated here. According to avian vets, more cockatiels are living lives well into their 20s because of better nutrition and advances in avian medicine. Feeding your bird a nutritional diet, keeping the cage and feeding dishes clean and seeking veterinary care when a bird becomes very ill is the best guarantee of a bird having a  long lifespan. Scroll down the page for a listing of the average lifespan of some popular species of pet birds.
